RODIN AND THE BIRON MANSION GARDENS: AN OPEN-AIR GALLERY

Rodin and the Biron Mansion Gardens: An Open-Air Gallery

As the first buds break through the winter grey, Paris rediscovers its unique light—the kind that carves volumes and awakens textures. For guests of the Monna Lisa, this season invites an exploration of the sculptor's art de vivre. Just minutes from our doors, the Musée Rodin garden serves as the perfect stage for this rebirth.

Auguste Rodin: The Father of Modern Sculpture

Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) is universally recognized as one of the sculptors who revolutionized modern art. Rejected three times by the École des Beaux-Arts, he forged his own path, moving away from the strict academicism of his era. His technique is characterized by expressive modeling, playing with unfinished textures (the "non finito") and capturing human emotion through the tension of the body. This unprecedented approach gave birth to universal works, permanently altering the history of European sculpture.

The Hôtel Biron: From Studio to Museum

The connection between Rodin and the site that would become his museum began in 1908. On the advice of his friend, the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, Rodin discovered the Hôtel Biron, a magnificent 18th-century private mansion in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. He initially rented a few rooms on the ground floor to set up his studios and receive his models, before occupying the entire estate from 1911 onwards.

In 1916, as his health declined, Rodin made a historic decision: he donated his entire body of work, his collections of antiquities, his archives, and his Meudon estate to the French State. This donation came with a strict condition: the Hôtel Biron must become a museum exclusively dedicated to his work. The Musée Rodin officially opened its doors to the public in 1919, two years after the artist's death.

An Open-Air Gallery: Landscape Architecture

The Musée Rodin garden is not a mere green space; it is a thoughtfully designed structure, an extension of the master’s studio. Across three hectares, the perspective is organized around the Hôtel Biron, creating vanishing lines that any design enthusiast will appreciate.

In spring, nature becomes a living material in dialogue with bronze. Rosebeds, still in the making, frame the famous Thinker, while linden tree alleys form botanical naves. For the architect, this garden is a lesson in proportions: how can an open space contain a tension as powerful as that of The Burghers of Calais? The answer lies in the contrast between the organic fluidity of cherry blossoms and the immutable rigor of metal.

The Art of Strolling: An Elegant Transition

A visit to the Musée Rodin is an immersion in suspended time. After admiring the silhouette of the Invalides dome silhouetted behind the sculptures, the return to Hotel Le Monna Lisa allows this aesthetic reflection to linger.

We invite you to conclude this springtime interlude in our lobby or your room, where the arty spirit of our establishment truly comes to life. Much like a sculptor refining his work, we have designed every corner so that rest is also a cultural experience. Here, the stroll does not end at the museum doors; it continues within the refinement of our living environment, designed for curious minds and lovers of beauty.

Practical Info: The Musée Rodin is located at 77 rue de Varenne. For the best experience, we recommend visiting on sunny weekday mornings, when the dew still glistens on the bronzes and the garden belongs to the dreamers.
